The city of Kaunas. Situated in the middle of the Region on the confluence of the two largest Lithuanian rivers, the city of Kaunas has been considered one of the most important cities in the country's history. The Nemunas river, still used for navigation today, has historically contributed to the development of the city. The city is also located at the crossroads of the country's two major motorways: the A1 motorway Vilnius - Kaunas - Klaipeda is a connection between the capital city of Vilnius and the ice-free Klaipe.da Seaport. The Via Baltica (road E67) leading from Estonia via Latvia to Poland is integrated into the TransEuropean motorway system, serving as a connection between Nordic countries and Central and Western Europe.
Kaunas Free Economic Zone. The Kaunas Free Economic Zone (Kaunas FEZ) is a site of about 5 square km located near Kaunas, the second largest Lithuanian city, and is planned to become one of the largest free economic zones in the Baltic Sea Region. Overview. Kaunas Airport's catchment area within one hour drive is 1.75 million. In a two hour drive, one can practically reach any border of Lithuania, bringing the population in the catchment area up to 3.4 million. The geographical location of Kaunas Region is highly favourable as it is in the centre of the country at the intersection of the main national and international transport corridors (motorways and railways)– see map below.
The airport is located 8 km outside of Kaunas, the second largest city in Lithuania. The distance to the capital Vilnius is 80 km.The airport has infrastructural and technical capacity, including a 3250 meters runway, to accept any type of aircraft. Kaunas Free Economic Zone (Kaunas FEZ) is a site of about 500 hectars bordering the territory of Kaunas Airport, and it is planned to become one of the largest free economic zones in the Baltic Sea Region.
Route development. Kaunas Airport has become a low fare airline centre in Lithuania. Two eminent European low fare carriers, Ryanair and Wizz Air, presently operate in Kaunas. The carriers started operations in autumn of 2005 and today we can offer direct flights to London Stansted, Stockholm Skavsta, Dublin, Warsaw. In autumn 2006, connections will start to Liverpool and Frankfurt Hahn.
The airport has proved its commitment to development and shown the demand for low fare flights of the region's citizens. Starting from 27.000 passengers in 2004, we served over 77.000 passengers in 2005. This year, Kaunas Airport expects to have a record-breaking 250.000 passengers! The major European low-cost carrier Ryanair launched a daily connection to London Stansted from Kaunas on 22 September 2005. The passenger numbers exceeded expectations as in the first six months of operations the airline carried more than 56 000 passengers (60% incoming).
